Tourism at the Niagara Falls

The Niagara Falls is located around the border of the United States and Canada.  The Niagara Falls is known all across the world and attracts millions of visitors every summer.  The Niagara Falls is the 2nd largest waterfalls in the world.  It quite possibly may be the most popular waterfalls in the world.  The Niagara Falls is best characterized by its massive height and beautiful water flow.  Every minute six million cubic feet of water flow over the crest line.  The water flows at 35 miles per hour. 

The Niagara Falls consist of three waterfalls: the American Falls, the Canadian Horseshoe Falls and the smallest of the three, Bridal Veil Falls.  The Canadian Horseshoe Falls is the most famous of the three.  When visiting the Falls, one can either visit it on the United States side or the Canadian side.  Tourism to Niagara Falls began to gain pace in the 1820s and has never lost a step since.

The Niagara Falls are about 12,000 years old.  Niagara comes from the Iroquois Indian word “onguiaahara” which means “the strait”.  It has been known to be the honeymoon capital of the world since the French gave it that title back in the day. 

Until the Statue of Liberty was standing, Niagara Falls were the symbol of America.  During the winter, ice bridges from below the falls.  Until 1912, people were actually allowed to walk on the ice bridge.  Niagara Falls is a big tourist spot, and what most tourist come to do there is to try to get as close as possible to the falls. 

The Maid of the Mist is a boat that takes you right up to the mist of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls.  It is by the far most popular Niagara Falls attraction and is located on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls.  The Maid of the Mist brings a person so close that they must even wear a poncho just to avoid becoming wet.  It is an experience only fully appreciated doing it in person.  The Maid of the Mist tour began in 1846 and still attracts millions of visitors each year. 

On the New York side of Niagara Falls there is an attraction called the Cave of the Winds.  Here you are able to be practically under the Bridal Veils Falls.  There is a “Hurricane Zone” where the falls is pretty much crashing down on you.  It is an experienced that only the Niagara Falls can provide.

Tourism in Niagara Falls is most popular in the months of July and August when kids are out of school and families plan family vacations.  However, any time is a great time to visit the Niagara Falls.  It is one thing to read about it, it is a whole new experience when seeing the beautiful falls in person.
